Memories by Betty Holden
This is the house where I was born and grew up in, 24, Amesbury Road, taken in 1933. My parents were the first tenants to move into the then newly built houses, provided by Manchester Council. I am the one in the middle with my brothers.
Here I am today, outside the same house. Sadly lots of my childhood memories have been demolished. Crosslee Municipal School and the Berkshire Tavern were both destroyed by fire. The Avenue Cinema, where we went to the Saturday afternoon matinee was also demolished to make way for a superstore.
However, the number 17 bus has been running along the same route since its start in about 1936.
